If you've come across the term buccal facial massage online, you've probably had one of two reactions. Either you're intrigued, or you're wondering why anyone would want a massage performed partly inside the mouth.
Both reactions make sense. It's not a common technique, and it looks unusual compared to a typical facial. But once you understand what it actually does, it starts to make a lot more sense.
What Is a Buccal Facial Massage?
A buccal facial massage is a technique that works the muscles of the face from both the outside and the inside of the mouth. Using gloved hands, a trained therapist applies pressure to the buccal muscles, the deeper facial muscles that can't be reached through external massage alone.
This isn't a new wellness trend invented for social media. Intraoral facial work has been used in physiotherapy and myofascial release for years. It has simply become more visible recently as people look for facial treatments that improve tone and tension without needles or downtime.
What Does It Actually Do for Your Face?
Most facial massages only work the surface. A buccal facial massage goes deeper, addressing the muscles responsible for a lot of the tension we hold without realizing it, especially around the jaw and cheeks.
The benefits people typically notice include:
- Reduced tension in the jaw and cheek muscles
- Improved circulation and lymphatic drainage
- A more sculpted, lifted appearance over time
- Relief from tightness related to clenching or grinding
- Smoother, more relaxed facial contours
- A release of tension and emotions held in the face, along with better facial posture over time
It's not a substitute for medical treatment, but for many people, it becomes a regular part of maintaining a more relaxed, defined face without anything invasive.
What to Expect During a Session
A session typically starts with an external assessment of tension and asymmetry, followed by focused work both outside and inside the mouth using clean, gloved technique. It's more intense than a typical facial massage, but not painful. Most clients describe it as a deep, releasing pressure, similar to how a deep tissue massage feels on the body.
Sessions are fully customized based on where you're holding tension and what your face needs that day, which is the same approach we take with every treatment at Ode To Skin.
Erin trained in person, directly with Yakov Gershkovich, the practitioner behind the Sculptural Face Lifting method, and brings that training into every session at Ode To Skin.
Is It Right for You?
A buccal facial massage tends to be a good fit if you deal with jaw tension, clenching or grinding, facial puffiness, or asymmetry, or if you're simply looking for a non-invasive way to support definition and circulation in the face.
It's not the right starting point for every skin concern, which is why we always recommend a consultation first. That way, we can talk through what you're noticing and whether this is the technique that will actually help, rather than guessing.
If you're curious whether a buccal facial massage is right for you, we'd be glad to walk you through it at our Burnaby studio. Book a consultation and we'll help you figure out the right approach for your face.
